WHAT IS TYPE 1 DIABETES ?
Simply put, Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is a life changing, life threatening diagnosis.
Type 1 Diabetes is an AUTO IMMUNE disease. It does not discriminate and can affect anyone, at any age, with little or no warning.
Type 1 Diabetes is NOT caused by eating too much sugar or bad lifestyle choices and at this point in time there is NO CURE and no possibility of reversal with diet and exercise. (or cinnamon or okra)
During the auto immune attack a persons own body destroys the insulin producing cells in their pancreas. Insulin is a necessary hormone that helps breakdown glucose in the bloodstream allowing it to fuel our bodies with energy. Without insulin, glucose builds up in the bloodstream and your bodies cells starve causing life threatening complications.
Injected insulin is required manually to live - not enough insulin and she can die - too much insulin and she can die.
Living with Type 1 Diabetes is a balancing act 24 hours a day 7 days a week 365 days a year
